I just went to the Korg D1600mkii from my MR8 I've used for the past 2 years

This thing is nice.

I used my MR8 more than any other multitrack I ever had. Over tha past 2 years, I recorded a lot, and it was because the unit is really easy to set up and record a new song and transfer to pc to archive and free up room on the chip.

but over the years, i slowed down a bit, especially lately, b/c i've needed to try stuff that I couldn't do or that I would just have to compromise too much or not to at all.

The MR8 is still in it's position here in my studio tho, and it's not going anywhere. Unlike all my old gear that's all unused, this thing is still great for a lot of stuff and quick stuff and recording radio programs at extended mode, and I have a learning curve to get going on the new box.

I went with retail local store and paid the tax and drove the drive but it's here now. I recorded a fun jam already and now i'm using the internal cdrw drive to back up all songs, not using my computer is nice.

I'll mix it on the MR8 first since I don't know how to mix yet on the Korg, maybe post tomorrow....

The Korgs are good units, and there's a great support forum at Korgstudios.com

The touch-screen looks good, and from what I can see with other Korg products, the manual is probably very well written.

tomleblanc is on a distinguished road
If anyone's interested, I was just looking at the specs for this unit and found a discounted ("blemished") one at MF: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...e_pid/242088X/

$839.20 instead of $1049.00!!!

Looks like a sweet recorder! Quite the step-up from an MR-8!!! I'm envious of you junplugged

I'm just curious why you went for the Korg instead of the Fostex VF 160 ?

A new piece of kit can really help to get the creativity flowing, once you get a little way up the learning curve. Enjoy

Ha, CF? No, but I won't be upgrading to a gig, unless it's like $12 and that may be soon....

But of all my upgrades to new multi's MR8 isn't moving. It's staying right where it is. For one thing, I have so many projects that I archived in the native format - I didn't use wave manager to clean up the tracks - so accessing them again I need to copy back to it. But it's still in use for all kinds of stuff and at 2 years old, I've never upgraded to anything so fast, it still feels like it's new.

Nothing beats the ease and speed of recording a track and usb-ing it to pc for mp3, well, I haven't actually tried it yet w/ the K, but still, it's one switch, it's on and ready. No hard drive and standbye and no fan noise, funny tho, from red to blue.

It really is amazing how much you can do w/ little cheap red.

since i can rec 8 tracks simultaneuos, eventually i'll transfer what i want to keep from my old MD and my 8 track cassette and sell those off. not worth much, but I need the space.

I popped a little plugged-in sample on NWR that I did the day I got it. First song called first test or something.

J.,

I'm a little disappointed that I didn't get, at least, a "LOL" or yelled at!

But anywho, you must explain. Why the Korg?

seriously though, don't stop coming around, even if you are a traitor...

see the 'Ha,' that's Ha, as in Hahaha, but restrained. well, I sure hope you didn't TYPE all that, you know about ctrl-c, ctrl-v, I hope....

Korg is blue, it matches the red of the MR8. And I already hae a dark grey MD, and a black x-14 and a tan tascam. The fostex was back and silver, not a match.

Ewwww, black and silver.

Who is coordinating fostex's colors anyways?

Umm, dude... you can not control me, I don't care how many times you push that key....

Glad to see your sense of humor is still present, even with a new piece of gear to contend with...

well, I tried a few out a few times and the Korg was really obvious how to work. I saw the vf but I didn't actually use it. Display was kind of small, but maybe not much smaller than this one.

Unfortunately size was part of it since I'm in an amazingly cramped space too. I tend to tweak pan a lot and this has pan pots over faders, like MR8. Stacked faders is ugly, and I like 'em lined up for some non-logical reason.

I've been looking for so long, and I have a bunch of other reasons, but they came and went and I started subconsciously filtering out some boxes and the Korg came out on top. I also have a friend who works at the support center in the next town over. Maybe I got tired of Fostex? I don't know some of these reasons are sensible and others aren't. I couldn't tell you exactly what all the differences are.

back to work!

These reasons make absolute sense to me also. Stacked faders would be "ugly", IMO.

Actually, I've never actually looked at the VF160 enough to reckon it's actual physical size. I too, have serious space restraints, but even moreso financial ones...

Hope you know that I was absolutely kidding about the "banish the traitor" thing... I'm just jealous
