can't hear piano roll

subject pretty much sums it up. i've never done anything with midi so i don't really know what i'm doing, but i tried to program the piano roll for a track and it's just not playing at all. i've messed with all the midi output settings in sonar (4, btw) and with all my systems soundcard settings. What am I missing?

Do you have a MIDI instrument to respond to the MIDI messages?

Well you can also use a DXi to enable playback. Insert a audio track and patch the Edirol VSC to it in the FX bin (or use the DXi Icon to do this). Then route the output of your MIDI track to the Edirol. Select a midi channel for the midi track, and then open the Edirol VSC (double click on it) and choose an instrument for the channel you selected.

Start playback. If you've done everything correctly, you should hear sounds. You can route additional midi tracks to the same VSC by choosing different channels for each track.
