Help me get my drum set to stay in one place.

I'm in the market for a new drum set (reccomendations for kits and hardware are welcome) but in the mean time I am using a friends Sunlite kit. I know, It's crap, but good to learn on.

Anyways, the bass drum keeps on slideing away on me while I'm playing it. Got any sure fire ways or know how to keep everything stationary?

Thanks

Mongoo

Play on carpet with the spikes on the legs out... Use a decent size carpet so that some of the stands and even your seat are on it so that the carpet doesn't move.. I've had to gaff my floor tom legs to a concrete floor a few times.. Thats about all I can offer.

With your new kit what sort of price range are you looking at?

Cinder Block on carpet in front of bass drum with cardboard/cloth to protect the hoop. OR you can tie a string/rope from your drum throne leg to the bass drum lugs.

I made two "shoes" out of plywood that the legs of the kick drum set in. The bottom of the shoes have drywall screws pointing down that dig into the floor/carpet and won't let the kick walk away from you. It works for me.

it can be tricky

if your spikes are long enough set them so it lifts the front of the bassdrum alil off the ground, that seems to help me the most. put something heavy like a cinderblock infront of it, and use a carpet... or a rubber mat if you can find one... even with all that its still not the easiest thing to pull off if you play hard and fast. you could also screw a piece of wood into the front of a carpet, then put your bassdrum right up to it, that worked great for me for a while, but then the carpet ripped.

I have a TAMA rockstart kit and the drums don't move. Tama has come up with some great hardware in my opinion, and it's somewhat affordable.

I agree that a lot of your issue is the spurs on the bass drum. Make sure that they are set correctly. If you still experience problems, there are a few manufacturers that make a rug with a block on the front to prevent slipping (I believe Canon makes one). It wouldn't look very professional to carry a cinder block into a gig.

Buy a few metres of fairly heavy guage chain, fix one end around one of your bass drum spurs with a padlock, pass the chain through the legs of your stool, and attatch to the other spur, pulling it tight. Attatch with another padlock. Now, unless your stool is somehow moving, the bass drum physically can't move away from you.

(S******s like a child at the mention of "stool" moving)

Ah, racially dubious - the above starred-out word was a word for laughing that rhymes with "giggers". Not that it's really important.

Check your local music store. I forget the name, but there is a company that makes a very cool drum rug with a built in bumper to keep the kick drum in place. They work great and cost less than $50
