When trying to remove tape hiss (from mixdown from an analog source) on either cakewalk proaudio or sound forge (4.o?) is it effective to use a noise gate? If so, approximately what frequency range should I look to cut. Perhaps there is a better way than a noise gate?

A noise gate is not the best because it will work only on silent points. When there is music, there will be hiss.
Use the various parametric EQ and sweep around till the hiss is lessened. (try 4000hz) |

A parametric EQ is a good idea but a tape hiss remover is a better one. Check out http://www.arboretum.com and their software goodies.

Tro Cool Edit Pro's Noise Reductor. It works for me. PM me if you need help using it.

What's a "parametric" EQ? I use the "graphic" EQ on Cakewalk, which is 20 GUI sliders on the screen.
