Record in MONO or Stereo?

Hi guys!

Newbie to home recording...

Do you guys record your tracks (instruments and vocals) in MONO, and then copy the track to stereo (using panning), or record in stereo?

For Guitar, I've stereo out, into my mixer then down to my PC - have you found any pros or cons for doing it either way?

What about vocals?

Most tracks are recorded mono. The exceptions are sources which are meant to be heard in their surrounding spaces, e.g., choirs, real pianos, ensembles.

Cloneboy Studio will become famous soon enough
Most things should be mono, as explained above. You should intentionally choose stereo for a reason, and if you don't have one--MONO it is.

Stereo recordings can sound very nice and realistic. An acoustic guitar for example sounds better in stereo, but when the guitar ends up in a dense mix it doesn't matter.

Stereo micing is not just putting two mics somewhere, you can find all about stereo placements at www.dpamicrophones.com (microphone university)

Peace, Han
