VF160EX - saving effects to tracks.. help

Probably a stupid question... I apply effects (reverb, etc) to a particular track in an original program. I then mixdown and the effect is included properly in the total mixdown, so I am cool with the mixdown. However, when I exit the original program and then re-open, the effects are not saved. I do not see how to go through an additional step to save them, following the instruction manual. I must be overlooking something... help will be appreciated.

Before doing the mixdown, when you have everything the way you want it, including the fader positions, then save the scene. The button for this is to the immediate left of the LCD screen under the word SCENE. Hit the STORE button and it will bring up a list of scenes. I scroll to 1, hit ENTER/YES, leave it undefined (untitled), hit YES again. Done. You can actually save many scenes in a mix. When you use the RECALL button you need to have the fader recall set to ON. This is in the SETUP menu.

So, in effect, the VF160 remembers the all the settings you made though it doesn't actually put it onto the tracks until mixdown. You can change settings of a given scene and hit the STORE button again...

Just a word of caution.
You have to be careful using the fader recall option. Obviously the VF can't physicaly move the sliders up and down, so it can cause some confusion if you decide to store the fader positions too along with each mix.

For example the physical slider might be set to half way, but because you stored the SCENE with the sldier all the way down you get no sound out of that track when recalling that SCENE. It might take you a while to figure out why that is if you store the fader positions in with the SCENE mix.

Personaly i never store the fader positions, only the EQ, track on or off, and the effects etc.

I also try to give each stored scene a unique name, so i know why I bothered storing it! for example 'vocinmix' 'chorusmix' 'solomix' and so on.

But differnt people work in different ways, the VF gives loads of possibilities.

Good thoughts here. Question: How do you not store the faders while storing everything else? Just leave 'em at zero? Not activate fader recall? There's so much about this machine I haven't figured out yet.

Indeed, the VF does gives lots of possibilities. I'm probably using 25% of them.

As far as I'm aware the default setting with a new vf160 is NOT to store the fader positions with the SCENE, I think you actualy have to go in and change the setting in SETUP in order to store the fader levels along with the mix - could be wrong, but that was my experience.

Yes, of course if you have a style of mixing which is constantly moving the fader controls then storing the position of them with the SCENE would be a good idea, but how would you handle slow fade in/out of each fader, you can't really store that practicaly, you'd need too many scenes!

For my style of music once I have got the right fader level set for the instrument it usualy stays put, but i can appreciate that in different genres the fader levels may need to be pumped and adjusted throughout the tune?

25%, wow, I probably only use 10% of the VF's capability LOL !

But that's OK, the features are there if you need them for a purpose, if you're making the music you want to without needing to bother with some features it doesn't really matter.

Oh, I forgot to say, here's a tip.

If you need a part to be boosted in a mix, say for a solo, rather than trying to remember to push the slider up at the right time you can store a SCENE with that instrument boosted in the EQ across the range by a couple of DBs, you notch up the bass, middle and hi's say by 2 points and then store that SCENE. Set the event recall to kick in at the appropriate time and the part is instantly boosted in the mix hands free.

Of course if you overdid the EQ boost it might alter the sound of the instrument too much, or add noise, but it works fine for gentle boosts I've found.

Thanks for all the great information!!! I am probably using only about 1% of capabilities of the machine right now, owned for just a month but I can see the power is there. Hopefully soon I can help others rather than just asking questions here.
