Guitar World's Guitar Design Contest Winners

Thought you'd all get a kick out of seeing the winners of Guitar World's guitar design contest from their December issue. The winner -- "The Splat-o-caster" -- will be built to spec by Fender's Custom Shop.

The runner-ups are "The Spider" and "The Stratelecaster."

i thought the purpose of designing a guitar would be coming up with a shape different from a strat... thats not designing a guitar thats just designing a paint job.

...what is this world coming to?

Splat-o-caster looks liek something out of the wild and crazy 1989-1992 erra. Buts its just a paint job. That is stupid.

The stratelecaster is fucking cool!

And the spider is interesting is you like that sort of thing.

I just like the idea of the the fly for a headstock. Almost like hunter/hunted.

The spider should win, and the Strotelecaster should just be a design Fender takes for a factory product.

You're missing a little irony here, I think.

I think a combo Strat/Les Paul would be cool.... I'm surprised no one has done it yet... that I know of...

the stratelecaster is neither fish nore flesh. because it is a much bigger piece of wood the 'strat' and 'tele' wouldn't sound like a strat or a tele.

besides that it's UGLY.

That's no paintjob folks. It's a Strat with a bunch of lava lamps in it. At least, that's how I read the article. Don't know where my copy is, as my 15 year old daughter swiped it when she saw Billy Joe from Green Day on the cover.
Have to admit that the contest turned out to be pretty lame.

lavalamps work with buoyancy and gravity and shouldn't be moved when they're hot, you would never be able to make it work in a guitar.

I was thinking the same thing. Mabye their going to do some kind of oil/water thing.

But the problem is it's still just a variation on a theme. I was hoping for something that showed a little original thought. Instead we got two derivitive drawing. The spider thing was more original, but not exactly what I would call appealling to the masses.

guitar world probly already sold all of the good ideas to the guitar companies, and these winners are just a way to avoid giving anyone deserving public credit for their work.

That spider thing would HURT to play. Too many pointy things right where it hits your body. Yuck.

You know, I've spent a great deal of time doing this kind of stuff, and those all just look amateurish. That is the kind of shit that happens when luthiers start trying to be "artists." I ain't no fucking "artist." I am a craftsman. Sure it needs to look good, but first and foremost it has to be functional. None of those qualify.

But hey, what do I know. This is just how I try and make my living (emphasis on try, unfortunately).

Sorry if I was misleading. It's suppossed to look like a bunch of lavalamps, not actually be wax in hot oil. The cavities will have some sort of liquid in them.
When I got mad at my college room mate, I would shake up his lavalamp. Man, would he ever get pissed!

Just checked out the issue. There's a dragon shaped guitar in there that looks extremely badass. The inlays are SWEET!!! I think I'd like one of these.

doesn't warmoth already make a double neck guitar thats a combination of a strat and a tele?
cause it seems to me that even that idea that originally seemed to have the slightest bit of thought put in is just a rip-off. how dissapointing.

i'll go with that ...someone ought to start up a thread here where you post a design and we wouldn't have to wait for a magazine to show it ...for the record i like the spider guitar just for novelty its kinda like Neilsens 5 string the bottom necks are totally unplayable but it looks cool to me ...i dig the stratelcaster too IF you could get both strat and tele sounds but when you think about it aren't all dbl necks a lil excessive, i have one and it's cool to play but i never take it anywhere....
