Manual record level workaround for MZ R90?

It is possible to get superb recordings using the Sony ECM MS907 mic - provided that the manual record level is set at the correct level before you start. Has anyone found a workaround to enable adjustment of record level on the fly? Forget the auto record level because the compression is too fierce.
