mackie or soundcraft?

hi folks,

im currently using a behringer eurorack ub1204fx-pro mixer in my bedroom studio and i have had enough of the piece of s**t. so ive put some research into buying a new mixer (£300 budget) and i cant make my mind up between the mackie 1202vlz-pro and the soundcraft m4. does anyone have any knowledge about this. cheers.

Allen & Heath. Used ofcourse. Have a look on eBay and keep your eyes peeled for a GS3, they pop up a lot on there for £2/300

M4. Decent pres, decent eq and decent features for the price. The M8 is not that much more expensive.

i think soundcraft will win it each time....that is if the mackie users dont launch a smear campaign

I agree that the Soundcraft should win this battle each time. However, my limited experience so far with the Mackie Onyx series mixers tells me that the tide could be shifting. I definately want to reserve final judgement on this until I have a better chance to work with an Onyx under my circumstances. So far though, sounds nothing like the VLZ crap.

Mackie sounds like Behringer and visa-versa. I had both at one time (both 48 ch desks) and there is no way I or anyone else who heard both boards could tell any difference in sound. I listened to Soundcraft when I was in the market for a better board. Soundcraft sounded way better, but I liked the A&H board's pre-amps better. So, I popped for a 32 channel A&H.

Forget the Mackie unless you want the same kinda sound you have now and look at A&H and Soundcraft. The A&H boards are still hand built in the original factory in England and do sound very good. Soundcraft is now owned by Harman and could start to go downhill in quality (if Harman's history is repeated).

thanks to everyone for there help. i was kind of leaning towards the soundcraft anyway. however it didn't even cross my mind to check out a second hand a&h on ebay. i am now asking myself the question though, is it a safe bet to but a second hand a&h on ebay rather than a brand new soundcraft?

I own a Behringer Eurorack MX1804X and just purchased the Soundcraft M-Series. I was looking at the Mackie as well. The reasons I purchased the Soundscraft are:

4 Aux Sends with individual controls and a Master return control
Insert Point on each Channel
Direct Output on each channel
Main Inserts
Great Preamps and EQ
S/PDIF Digital output

I hooked it all up today and it is crystal clear. It is real easy to use. This one is a keeper.
