fostex e16 recording problems

just moved house, and my 16 track didn't seen to like the move.

it plays back ok, but it doesnt seem to record - although on closer inspection it seems to record really, really quietly.

any ideas? im not even sure where to start, it's a bastard getting into it to poke around in the first place!
