What is it about some melodies that makes them better than other melodies. Why did the tune "Yesterday" - become the most played song on the radio ever?

Why is Beethoven's fifth symphony so memorable?

What exactly is it that makes a melody stand out. Is it even definable?

It might not be what you want to hear but the fact is that these songs were written a while ago, they are therefre more straight-forward in terms of structure. We have to do a lot more to create one of those. The fact remains-a song which holds the test of time is not always the most apreciated. I mean I have so much more respect for Lennon than MR Mcartney with regard to his lyrics and the melodies aren't bad either.

A good melody is something that sticks in your head and is whislatable (if that's a word)-think of christmas song.

Whoever figures that out will soon be rich.

Come to think of that: Ask Paul McCartney. He's rich.

Why does a higher percentage of the population prefer the taste of chocolate to say, cardboard? There are certain combinations of sounds or colors or tastes that appeal to the majority more than others, and the songs you mentioned have a good combination of elements that a lot of people find appealing,be it melody or lyric or both.So go write one! Cheers!
