Microphone recording problems...

I bought a cheap dynamic microphone (Stagg SD 500 I think) and I want to plug it into my SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 soundcard. When I plug it into mic in (with adapteur from big jack to small jack) I can´t record anything, but a noise. Where shall be the problem???

P.S.: I have AC 97 drivers intalled too.

does the microphone have a 3 pin plug (called an XLR), or does it have a 1/4" plug (like a big headphones plug)?

It has XLR to the mic. and big jack on the other side of the cable.

Well, this has been talked about a zillion times, but why not a zillion and one?

The Soundblaster is NOT a good card for audio recording. The mic pre-amp on the card is not designed for anything beyond a cheap little mic that people use for online chatting.

Assuming that you have everything configured properly including the correct drivers and that you've enabled the Soundblaster for recording, you willbe much better off (though it still probably won't sound great) getting an inexpensive mic preamp and then connecting the output of that to the LINE IN on your Soundblaster.

If little of that made sense to you, do a search here for preamp questions or Soundblaster. If you are more serious about recording, do a search on M-Audio or E-Mu, as they offer some inexpensive soundcards that will give you much better results.
