244 & 464

I was just wandering if anyone knows whether you could play tapes that had been recorded on a 464 but then play them back with a 244. I have loads of stuff that i recorded on a 464 but unfortunately I no longer have that 4 track. Alhtough I now have a 244 and so i'm hoping that the tapes will be able to play in exactly the same way as on the 464. Is this likely?

As long as you recorded with the dbx on, on the 464 and at the standard high speed of 3.75 ips, they should play pretty well on the 244 which only runs at that same speed and has no option to turn off the dbx.

Beyond that, the only issue you might run into is the head alignment and specifically, azimuth which might be off by a degree or two from one machine to the other. In stereo, you may not hear if its out, but if you monitor the tracks in mono, (panned center), you may notice a drop in high frequency response if it's out of alignment.

Cheers!

Different DBXNR in both the 244 and the 464

The tapes will play though I asked the question of a Tascam Product specialist once who told me the DBX was different. I think the 244 used something akin to DBX type I and the 464 used DBX type II. I used the 464 to transfer the tapes made 12 years earlier on a 244 and was satified with the results. As the previous post mentioned, be sure to use the High speed setting on the 464 as this was the speed used by the 244.
