what i need to do what i want that i can afford with the money i have.
alright, im fairly new to the recording thing, i suppose. i play in a band of three people. we like to record improv and edit it later on the computer. weve been able to do this to a certain extent with nothing more than a cheap computer mic and a copy of sound forge, cool edit pro, and cakewalk. we use a laptop to record and we want to able to record everything onto separate channels on cakewalk so we have more mixing room. we would only need to record three tracks simultaneously although more would be nice. any suggestions on what we could buy to enable us to do this that is within a reasonable price range would be greatly appreciated.

Well the 3 tracks make it a trick, as that's an odd number. If it were 2 tracks, you could get away with your onboard soundcard, but not for 3.
Basically, you're going to need to get some kind of outboard interface connecting via USB2 or Firewire. Does your notebook have either of these connections? |

firstly stay away from usb sound solutions.too many people are having problems.
secondly please list your computer configuration. if your computer is relatively new you could look at a delta pci sound card possibly, but i need to know your pc configuration. also what do you have currently in your pci slots ? once we get the computer settled you will need some sort of mixer (eg yamaha mg) and some decent microphones. also a NOTE. never use on board sound or cheap consumer sound cards. and definitely dont use MIC input of these. they are terrible quality. |
