Can I get Mic??? - Home Recording

I would like to record my singing through cool edit pro. Right now I use a cheesy 8 dollar computer mic, which sucks and makes alot of background noise and pops. Is it possible to make good quality audio recordings with just getting the right microphone for Cool edit? If so, please let me know what and where I can purchase one.
Is it important top have some type of mixing board along with a good mic and a good sound card? I'm clooless, please HELP!!!
