Yamaha MD8 recording

Can anyone help in laymans terms ?
1. what is the best track to record (download) backing track from external player (mini disk or cd)?
2. I am recording my vocals on track 1, but the vocals do not go down dry - they are mixed with the backing track. I need to hear backing track in headphones, sing through mic to track 1 and hear vocals dry.

Please use simple explanation as I am beginner (or thick!)

MD8--nice box; I have one in my studio but it is just for decoration.

Not quite sure what you are doing; however, if you put "background music on one track of the md8, that leaves you seven other tracks to do the vocal.

But, you need to put the music in the CUE mode of the MD8 and then key up another track in the RECORD mode. Now, you will be able to hear the music and/or sing along with it, kind of like karoke but it is called OVERDUBBING.

If you don't put the recorded track [s] into CUE mode, then the whole operation will get screwed up and you'll lose, maybe, all the sounds.

As for FX or reverb, that can be added from an outboard box whenever you want it. So, you would be basically mixing two tracks into one stereo track when you are happy with the vocal track.

I don't believe there is built in reverb on the MD8==you will need an outboard FX box.

Read the manual about the CUE mode.

Would you consider selling that "decoration" to me at a reasonable price?
I may have to upgrade from my tascam 488 and according to waht Ive read so far the Md8 has all the features tha I want ( real knobs/cut and paste/more than two tracks at a time/portability) seems like a pretty reliable box too. However the Data disk thing seems like a bit of a bitch. Give me a PM. thanks-Benjie
