Talking Free Drink Coasters and Frisbees

It's a good thing CDs are cheap. I just realized I have burned about 1000 CDs in the past year and a half in the quest to learn to master about 34-35 songs of my own. In the process I have learned a lot. And I am still learning. I'm thinking of offering to master somebody elses mixes to get something fresh to do. I have developed some good techniques and can get pretty close to commercial quality. I'm almost there. Training your ear is the toughest part. Anyone want a freebie? Let me master a couple of your songs for free and just give me some feedback on what you think and how they stand up to commercial quality. I've been told I'm way too anal because it's my own music and nobody can tell it's not commercially done. But then again I'm too anal.

This just brings back memories of buying 12-packs of CD-R's...

For $695.00...

And that was the discount price...

Some things really have gotten better.

You could save some money if you make test cds on cd-rws. That way you can use the same one all the time. (until it gets flakey)

When I finish recording I would love to get some fresh ears on the mixes. I'd take up your offer.

Really? I can only remember them being about $5 per blank.

Guess I came into the game later!

I remember the first home CD burner I ever saw. I can't remember if it was Nakamichi or something else, but it was about $18,000US.

Talking Ahhh back in 1893

They had this cylindrical paper towel shaped aluminum thing with a crank on it and you would spin it manually while it sat there and recorded everything. It has a needle like on a phonograph(what's a phonograph?) that digs grooves into the cylinder. On playback though, you had to bring it up to speed to make it sound normal. What an invention. My Great grandfather owned one of these and my uncle has possession of it. It has 1893 stamped on it along with Williams Bros. stamped on the bottom. I know it wasn't really mass produced because I have never seen another.
I can remember a CD burner was around 4-5 grand in the mid to late 80's. And Cdrs were about 7 bucks each. They were considered sub-standard also.

What equipment are you using to master with Dantel? I'd be interested once I finish the project I'm on.

free coasters...

...you'll find there's a glut of 'em already among home recorders!

[I'd decorate the Christmas tree with them but there are SO MANY.]

I hate to remind you John, but that was 1989 or 1990. That was 15 years ago.

You know you're getting old when a decade doesn't seem like a long time.

First one I used was a 1x that the company paid $3000 for and if I remember right the blanks were $25 each.

Any disk took 90minutes to burn (even if you were only putting a few Mb on it.) And we made a LOT of coasters...

That was around 1990

Talking Equipment to master with

Well currently I've been using my Summit DCL 200 Dual Compressor/Limiter and an Equalizer. My monitors are Mackie HR824s. Simple but productive. I do have a reverb/delay unit, but I also will use the ones built into my mixer. If I'm mixing and mastering I use a whole host of shit. Some mornings I wake up and stumble across an old piece of equipment that I thought I sold on ebay. I have a DBX 386 preamp I like and really puts out a pure sound. I have a pretty good collection of pure shit mics and some decent ones. I record into a roland, but I like the new computer shit I have obtained recently, much easier and I like the simplicity and speed.
