crackly waves

I have a Fostex Mr-8 that I record on then I transfer those tracks to my computer via USB. When I get those waves onto my PC, they're quiet so I need to raise the levels (I use Goldwave). Then when I put the tracks together to make one .wav, the audio get really crackly at most places. Even though the volume doesn't seem to be off the scale.

Can someone help me with this?

Are you applying effects in the Goldwave stage of mixing? Sometimes, if the computer gets bogged down with too many effects, it will crackle on mixdown.

I just started over from the basic files and this time i only adjusted the volume and it's no longer crackling.
