How can i get this 'Trailer Voice' Effect?

Hi folks!

thanks my first post here so please dont flame me

I'm producing a trailer for my website and want to do some narration by my own - too bad i do not have this typical trailer-voice you know from the cinema and tv *G*

is there any way to create a similar effect with software like audition/cool edit?

even making my voice a little bit 'thicker'/'richer' and depper would help. could someone give me some hints how to do that?

i'd say just hire a voice over talent. that's the reason these guys get the big bucks...because they're voices are so great naturally. Your local recording studios can help you contact the talent
you can try pitch shifting, EQing, etc. but I doubt you'll be able to get the sound you want. You can also try and find a friend or someone you know who has a good enough voice that might do it for free or cheap.

I used to produce commercial audio for radio here in Toledo. I can point you in the right direction.

As stated, the first thing you need is someone with a decent announcer's voice. It doesn't have to be amazing, but you do need something to work with; my voice, for example, is *terrible* for announcing and nothing short of a miracle could ever get it to sound good.

The two big announcer mics are the EV RE20 and Shure SM7. Every radio station I've been in is packed to the gills with these. High end dynamics are the general rule for radio.

None of the local radio stations had *anything* remotely impressive for preamps or mixers. You're talking low end Mackie 12 or 14 channel mixers and that's it.

Compression is important as well. A -18 thresh with about 4:1 ratio and fairly fast attack, slow release will get you in the ball park.

A little EQ is golden. On men a 900hz narrow cut, a 400hz boost for 'warmth', and a 3000 khz boost for clarity helps out. If the vocal is muddied skip the 400hz boost and notch cut around 200hz. This should get you in the ballpark. Don't freak out w/ EQ--this isn't a lead vocal! Just enough to polish it up.

Okay, once you have the audio you need to clean it up. Remove all the pops, coughs, whatever. TIGHTEN UP THE DELIVERY. That's how they get the speakers to sound like they are talking fast--remove a little space between each word and just delete it.

Some guys use pitch/time stretchers to achieve this effect but I'd rather do it by hand because I have more control. If you are in a hurry just alter tempo but not pitch and you'll be close enough.

Once everything is cleaned up add some nice reverb in there... a fairly annoying amount is standard.

Oddly enough in Toledo, Ohio all the radio stations are using Cool Edit Pro/Adobe Audition as a DAW.

thanks for that detailed insight. i tried it but i think my voice is to crappy, i sound like i've swallowed a frog lol.

are there some technics to train my voice?

You could practice saying words such as "Soo Soo Soodio... Soo Soo Soodio" as well as "Fa fa fa fi fi fi foe foe foe" or "Mee mee mee mee moo moo moo".
