Pre-amp question
Ok, so I've figured out my sound card is poop, so i'm getting an M-audio delta 44. I think also need a preamp yes? I want to record guitar/bass and vocals mainly.
My question is can a "mic" pre-amp work with guitars and basses etc? Am I being dumb? Oh, one other thing, if I get a mixer will that mean I dont need pre-amps? I'm looking at a behringer UB802. Thanks, LMac |

Well, most mixers do have pre-amps in them, although they are not as good as rack units, for what you're probably trying to acomplish, the preamps on the behringer should be enough. just run all your tracks to the behringer and send the main out/stereo out to your new sound card. That's a quick and easy way to get started

Dude, if you're going to get a new soundcard, invest in a Lynx. They're real pieces of "professional quality" equipment, unlike those rancid toys spewed by the likes of M-Audio and RME.
Pre's there is no shortage of them [good and bad] but only one soundcard I've ever met that did A/D-D/A conversion worth a shit and that's the Lynx. Best of luck with the seach.

A "mic" pre is a device that raises the output level of a mic. So it will work with anything you record with a mic. And you should be micing your guitars and not recording them direct!!!!!!!!!!! Basses can record very well direct many times but you should put a DI box between the bass and the mic pre.
Most mixers have mic pres built into them, but not all.
