combining tracks?

Ok im going to take a swing at explaining this verbally but if it doesn't work, I may have to resort to screen shots. I tracked some vocals with a friend the other night using cool edit pro 2.0 . Since we didn't have alot of time, I just got him to run through the song a few times and then I was planning on just using the best parts from the different takes.
OK so i got everything cleared and cleaned up and all the parts I want picked out but I have hit a snag. How do I make the bits and pieces that I have joined together become one file instead of 2-3 overlapping each other. I wouldn't care about this but apparently cool edit doesn't want to apply FX in real time to the files when they are lined up this way?
Ok so that looks confusing, heres an example. Lets say I used the first 2 lines from verse 1, which was on track 1. Then I wanted the 3rd line from another take which happened to be on track 2 and then a 4th verse line that was on track 3 (from an entirely different take). I cut and silenced them where those pieces were the only thing left from the original takes. Then I locked them into time or whatever on the grid. Then I drug each piece up to track 1 to make my complete first verse. Now is there some shortcut or something that I can use to unite those pieces that Ive joined?

Start out in Multitrack View and use the Volume Envelope feature to mute each track when you want another one playing. Do this to each of the tracks you are "comping" until the vocal part will play through without problems. Then select the vocal tracks you are comping and go to Edit/Mix Down Selected Tracks (Bounce) [or something very similar]. This will form a new track in the first available space in Multitrack View that will be a comp of what you did with the various vocal tracks. Then use that track for processing (mute the originals before doing a mixdown to Edit View).

Try this out a couple of times until you get the hang of it. You can always delete the new track if you mess it up. The important thing is not to touch the originals.

OK i see the mixdown to wav feature but how do I select the ones that I want to bounce? It seems like I can only highlight one at a time. I know im missing something simple, yet again.

try this.. right click on an area in the multitrack that has no wav source then select mixdown and you should be able to mix down all the wavs you have in the multitrack

do that and tell me if that works for you.. also i dont think it matters when you do the effect.. after you after you have mixed down all the tracks you can just go to edit view and apply the effects that you want

Do not select anything but mute those which you don't want in your mix down.

You should be able to do it the same way you select anything in Windows: left click on the first track, Ctrl/click on the second, and so on.

To summarize: use volume envelopes on all of the tracks that are involved so that you get a smooth playback when you solo all of the tracks.

Then highlight all the tracks involved: left click the first track, then CTRL left click each of the others.

Then: Edit>Mixdown to File>Mono. When you do this, make sure all the tracks are panned the same and at the same volume. If the resultant mixdown is too quiet (if the wav is too small), go back into Multitrack and boost the level of each of the tracks by the same amount.
