"Listening to Mozart increases your IQ"

I once heard this. I think some marketing guy at a record label came up with that one some time in the 1990's to boost a softening market for classical music. Then along came "The Eroica Trio". Since then it's been pretty much a free for all in classical marketing gimmicks.

I'm bringing this subjuct up in this forum because most of my technical music study has been in classical keyboard works, and my primary point of view of the subject is that of a keyboardist's.

So, going back to the original thread title "Listening to Mozart increases your IQ", I'm countering with "If you really want to increase your IQ to it's fullest potential, listen to Bach".

I disagree. When you listen to Mozart you think, hey maybe I could write one of those clever ditties. So you work to improve your understanding of composition, thus increasing your IQ.

When you listen to Bach, you think crap I could never improvise a six-part fugue. Then you resume drinking.

I often get that feeling listening to Glenn Gould's or Turek's renditions of Bach's solo keyboard works.

GWB's impeachment? Already? I thought Herr Cheney was going to wait until he was sure he would inherit 3.9 more years...
