New Tuning Pegs for my Fender Strat...???

I am restoring an old 1980s Fender Strat (Japanese). The tuning pegs on it have seen better days. So I want to replace them. Now, since this is not some vintage million-dollar-series guitar, it doesn't matter if I find the exact same make and model that are on their now, which are Gotoh if I am not mistaken.

Anyway, I have been looking at the "Schaller Locking Tuners" that come on the Fender American Deluxe Series guitars. Are they as good as they sound on paper? Anyone have any complaints? Further suggestions?

MIJ strats are nice guitars, i'd like to get my hands on one eventually. some people like locking tuners, some don't, as with any product. i've considered them on my cheap ibanez because of the staggered string post heights, which gets rid of the need for string trees (one less friction/hangup point for the strings). other companies offer locking tuners, including sperzel and planet waves. if you aren't having many problems with your current hardware, aside from usual wear, i'd just go with a sealed-type schallers, sperzels, or gotohs. note that with all of these except vintage style replacements will probably require drilling bigger holes for the posts and new screw holes, nothing too complicated. go to www.stewmac.com and look around, get an idea of what is out there.

The best tuners out there, bar none, are the Gotoh 510s. They are better machined, better finished, and better designed than anything else on the market. All parts carries the 6-on-a-side locking 510s, so you can get them easily, and they will be better than anything on the market. Sperzel was the first after-market locking tuner, and they are nice, but they are not even close to the 510s. The best part of the 510s is they do not require any knobs to lock in the string. You slide the string in the hole (that sounds dirty), and then you start turning the tuning key, which means you can not lose the locking knob (which happens a lot with Schallers and Sperzels). As you tune up to pitch, it automatically locks in the string. It is Gotoh's Magna-lock system. They also have NO backlash, so tuning is much easier. The same can not be said of Schallers or Sperzels.

I will not use anything but 510s on the guitars I build, and I know a lot of other luthiers who feel the same way. They are a little more expensive (though not compared to buying the Schallers through Fender), but they are much, much better gears. Well worth the extra money.

with light... but to add my 2 cents i like any lockers but i do have the schallers from fender i also have the LSR roller nut and the block saddles this combination along with good setup has left me with a strat that DOES not go out of tune ...when i first got it i never put the trem bar in it was suicide ,now i can do 80's power dives and she sings in tune all night long
