Vokator in Sonar

Alright, guys -

But, here's my next, and probably far from last, question:

Why the funk can't I control Vokator with my MIDI keyboard in Sonar? I can control pretty much every other DXi in Sonar, except for Vokator. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong! Remember, I'm a crazy newbie...so please be patient.

Vokator is an effect,not a synth that's why.
You would need a midi controller that had knobs or sliders to control this with something other than a mouse in real time.
You could draw envelopes and automate that way if that's what you're looking for.

Wouldn't my MIDI keyboard be the controller? I can control Vokator fine in it's stand-alone program, but just not in Sonar...so I can't record anything with it.

Keys on a music keyboard send on/off and velocity messages.

Knobs and sliders send value messages from o-128.

I looked up Vokator and it's a vocoder,you'll have to explain how you "controlled" it.

I have a MIDI capable Roland EM-10...so in the Vokator stand-alone program, I spoke/sang into the microphone while playing the keyboard...same way any real vocoder would work...you need two inputs, the vocoder combines the two together...so hope that explains it a little better.

That explains it a little better.
This has nothing to do with midi.
You are using the mic as one input,what are you mixing it with?
In standalone it's probably using the microsoft synth or the soundcards.
You need to select an input source to mix with your mic,try a dxi.

Vokator has a built-in virtual keyboard/soft synth thing, so I'm using my Roland EM-10 (through MIDI) to control that. And the program has built in sound presets, which takes care of the 2nd input (my mic being the other input).

Do you have a midi track assigned as the controller?
Input-keyboard
Output Vokator.
With Sonar you must mouse click the assigned midi track for the keyboard/controller to sound.

This just in - I was able to record my voice and then add Vokator as an effect...no luck controlling it with my keyboard, though. So I need to somehow link up an Audio track with a MIDI track so I can just use the piano roll to draw in the midi notes to control Vokator...is that possible? Kinda sucks, you'd think there'd be a way to do it all in real-time....or maybe there is?

What does it say in the manual?
I'm sure it's just a matter of routeing the keyboard properly.
Do you have a midi trck and audio track assigned to Vokator?
Did you try the MI website forum?

The manual doesn't offer much help in this situation...it doesn't seem to cover plug-ins that require 2 inputs like Vokator...

I have an audio track assigned to Vokator right now...you can't (that I know of) assign Vokator to a MIDI track alone, you have to set it up through the DXi button, which then creates an Audio and a MIDI track, although you can only arm and record onto the MIDI track...

What is the MI forum? Do you mean NI?

I would:
- Insert the Vokator as an effect on an audiotrack.
- Route the output from a MIDI-track to the Vokator.

No, I haven't tried that yet.
Would I just create a seperate MIDI track and click on the output and the Aduio track should be available to pick?

I'm at work right now, so unfortunately I can't experiment right now.

No, if you insert it as an audio effect, it will be "applied" to the track. And if it's supposed to be MIDI-controlled, then select/create a MIDI track and point it's output to the Vokator.

What if I had 2 or more different audio tracks with Vokator applied to them - how would the MIDI track know which audio track to control? (I'm new).
