Question Recording from Cassette Deck

Hello. I have been recording audio books from cassettes via a cassette deck to my PC and saving them as MP3 using various recording software.

This is not working well on my new pc with XP. One hour of recording is at least 40Mb. using a bitrate of 8 which should produce 7.0 MB per hour. I have tried several software packages which produce the same result. Perhaps I have it hooked up wrong?
out in
L O** O white Control
A1 ll
R O* O red O O

This is what the back of the cassette deck shows. I have a red color cord going into the OUT RED* slot and a white cord going into the OUT WHITE** slot. This cord is reduced to one cord which I have plugged into the microphone slot on the back of my PC. HELP! THANKS

Since it's not a mic, why did you plug into mic input on PC ????

Here's an easy setup.
Cassette Line Out ---- L + R RCA to male stereo mini plug ----> Line IN of PC soundcard ( i.e. any Soundblaster or similar)
Note: you can get a 3ft cable for about $2

I record as WAV using Creative Recorder program. ( comes with Soundblaster CD ) Auto levels are great. Very simple and about 10 mb per minute.
Then, I burn to CD when I have completed the album or project.

If your recorder program saves as MP3's, the recording process should be similar, with smaller files created.

Hope this helps.
