Try it at 128kb - that's near-CD quality. You're gonna get some loss at 64, that's normal.

yeah, 128 will sound a LOT better than 64. sadly, if you're trying to take a 40MB file and bring it down to 2MB there's not much you can do to save the quality (at least in regards to using a lossy vs. lossless format)

One thing you can think about (which will help a little)...is ask yourself does it really need to be a stereo file? I know we want to try and preserve it as much as possible, but is there much panning information that really needs to be heard? is it just for a few people to listen to just to hear your band or something? try summing it down to mono and listening. you may actually not mind it at all, and this way you can cut that 40MB in half right off the bat. I'm assuming you chose 64Kbps first because it got the 40 under 2MB. 128 probably won't bring it down that much...you'll probably still be a little bit over. So try the mono thing. Good luck

320kb is pretty shit hot. I recorded a track for the film "hollywood Flies" (in theatres soon kids) and my publisher sent them a 320kb mp3 for them to listen to. In the end they actually cut the film with the mp3 on the soundtrack. They didn't ask for a CD version.

It's not a crappy little film either, it's a proper feature film. Crazy.

you think this has something to say about the ears of the non-audio world? i sure think so. i mean, why else do consumers prefer downloading crappy 64Kbps MP3s instead of spending a few bucks on the single or even .99 on iTunes? i guess we shall soon see
