Can rythm section in my Alesis QS8 replace my Boss DR-5 Dr. Rythm?

I just bought a QS8- I think it was made in '97 -and before I get into the manual too far I was wondering if anyone would know about how nice the rythm sounds are. I have used a DR-5 for beats in the past & never quite liked it.

When I go to rythm/FX I can only find beats that have fx. I would assume that it had a simple drum section but so far I'm not finding them.

I briefly checked into the manual but I can't stand going that route.

thanks----

Duce

My recommendation - grit your teeth and RTFM ('read the freaking manual' - sometimes a different 'f' word is used...) just like we all have to do.

You are basically asking someone to do it for you - and the way your question is phrased you are the only one who can make that judgement anyway.

No

just looking for a head start.

the first part of the post is asking if anyone has an opinion about the keyboard rythm section vs that of my common drum machine.

Oh sorry. I must have misread it. I thought you said you briefly checked into the manual but you can't stand going that route.

Well, an interesting question. One thought is that what is "hot" changes pretty rapidly in hip hop and other genres that focus on beats. As the QS (and I have one that I've had since about 98-99) is a little old by these standards, you may not like the drum sounds you get. You certain can play and program various rhythm kits from the QS keyboard and record them into another program, where you can tweak the heck out of them. You can also buy some expansion cards for the QS which may have some beats you like or have some drum samples you like. If you have a RAM card, you can import wav samples into the QS for use in your own kits.

I like the QS8 as a controller and some of the sounds are good for layering my main instruments. However, if I really was into beats, I would probably look more toward softward and using the QS as an input device.

Take Care

You're welcome. I guess if I went more into making beats, I would consider some of the software packages that do that well: Reason, Fruitty Loops, P5 and Storm. There are lots of drum machine like Battery, DR008, LinnPlug, Stylus, Microtonic, etc. etc. that can give you lots of drum sounds. Then there are the programs that let you either create your own or tweak existing loops..... like Acid and Intakt etc. etc. Millions of great CDs with beats or individual drum hits and, of course , they can all be mangled with plug ins.

Have fun!

If it helps

I've got a QS7.1 and used to use it for beats. The previous post is correct. At this point in time a lot of the sounds are outdated, however the 'tribal and ethinc' ones are still good. I've had the most success using other software such as fruityloops or even samples and then using the sounds from the QS to enhance.
