Setting Sonar 2.2 midi outs?

I've been recording some songs off my keyboard into Sonar 2.2. via midi. Most of the time the sounds play back correctly but once in a while cross instruments play eg piano playing bass etc. I notice if i play a commercial midi file a Sysex meesage is displayed before playing the song, i take it this is a system exclusive message code that sets the gm outs. How do i generate a Sysex message, is this what i need to do to bring the instruments onto the correct channels?
