Newbie question about data transfer to PC

Hi all,

I am new to digital recording and have a very tight budget. I am considering buying an older Sony MDM X-4 just to get started on live recording. If I want to use my PC for storage and editing of the MD data how can I download it from the Sony recorder? Thanks.

Funny you ask this. I was just given a Sony MZ-N707 and did a little recording. Pluged a USB cable in to the unit and the back of my computer. I can see the files but I can't figure out how to get them from the MD to the PC.

You can't download MD files

Sony designed the MD to keep people from stealing music. So if you record something on your MD, you can't move it like a file from the MD to your computer's hard drive. You have to go out the headphone jack of the MD and into your sound board, and record the music again with the computer as it is being played on the MD. When I found this out, I sent my MD back.

The new HD MD was supposed to have file transfer capability, but I have heard it's still in Sony's proprietary format, which may slow you down on your next steps.
