No sound on playback, no MIDI output devices?

Just installed Cakewalk Home Studio 2004. Hit play, no sound. Options|MIDI devices shows no inputs and Microsoft MIDI mapper for output. When I highlight MS MIDI mapper and click OK, it still give the No MIDI outputs selected error message. Any ideas about the fix?

I'm running an HP pavilion with XP and a realtek AC95(?) soundcard.

HS2004 uses a special WDM driver mode called KS. When this is in use, the normal Windows MME sound driver is unavailable - this is why midi mapper does nothing.
You can switch off KS in the Options/Audio menu my checking "Use MME even when WDM drivers available". The Microsoft GS wavetable software synth will then become available as a midi output - use this rather than midi mapper as it's more direct. You may have to restart the program for the changes to take effect.

There is a higher quality solution that Cakewalk intend you to use in the normal KS driver mode.
Load the VSC soundcanvas DXi softsynth into an audio track and select that as the output for the individual midi tracks. There is no need to have a midi output device selected in the programs options, and the VSC will not appear as a midi output option there. Unfortunately, it cannot be used as the programs metronome.

Thanks for the tip, inserting the VSC DXi gets the MIDI working. It calls up a window prompting creation of a MIDI source track and first synth output (audio). Is there a way to get those tracks w/o having the VSC synth track?

Couldn't find the MME/WDM button on Options|Audio...is it somewhere else?

Not sure what you are asking here.

The VSC (or any DXi for that matter) is patched onto a standard audio track, while the midi source is a standard midi track. You need to have both.

However, you always have the ability to insert a midi or an audio track without using the DXi synth rack. Simply right click in the left pane of track view, and from the menu choose insert midi (or audio) track.

Or use the Insert menu instead.
