Did you try the factory reset?

"Press UTILITY. Use the VALUE + or - to select INITIALIZE, then press ENTER. Use the VALUE + or - to select FACTORY PRESET, then press ENTER."

I borrowed this from arcaxis that borrowed it from Roland that borrowed it from Japan that borrowed it from somebody way smarter than me.

The ribbon cables are the flat multi-conductor wiring that makes the connections from board to board. These usually have connectors on the ends that plug onto the board or it may have no connector and just be like a thin flexible circuit board with copper foil that makes the connection. They do occasionally get loose and fail to make connection. Boingoman is simply saying check to make sure all the connectors are plugged firmly to its mating connection on the circuit boards.

The static strap is a device you would wear on your wrist with a wire on it which attaches to something which is grounded. As you move around you can build up a charge of static electricity which could damage electronic components. The strap drains off the static charge.

Also make darn sure you've got the board unplugged from the wall if you go back in pokin' around !! Electricity hurts like the dickens....

If you have any friends that frequently works on the hardware insides of a computer, I would recommend enlisting their assistance. Much of what goes on inside a keyboard is very similiar to a computer and someone used to working in a PC might be able to spot something right away.
