Recording instruments

First, I'm a novice at this recording stuff; I'm hazy on all this bit-rate/sampling stuff, so here we go.

Recorded a bass guitar track, about 5 minutes long. When I saved the session, the WAV file wound up being 4 GB. Yes, GB. I'm obviously doing something wrong, and also very obviously setting up or saving wrong.

Had previously recorded some tracks from a Tascam 488 into CEP, and wound up with normal/expected/managable file sizes. Now I'm usin the Tascam as a mixer of sorts, running the amp mic into the Tascam, then the Tascam into the back of the computer.

Any assistance appreciated. Please keep in mind I'm a not-so-high-tech kinda old guy.

To begin with at least, use 16 bits, 44.1kHz - does that fix the problem? I have to say that it sounds like something else is amiss here to end up with a file of that size!

The faster the sample rate, and the deeper the bitdepth, the more space a .wav file will take up. But 4 G? I've got whole projects that are not that big, recorded @44.1K and 32 bit. I'll be interested in how you did it.

First, I started having more problems with the program, so I uninstalled/reinstalled it. Not that there wasn't some "operator error" in there somwhere.

I did change the settings to record @ 16 bit-44.1kHz. The file sizes are a more reasonable 25MB.

Still learning...........
