Which Compressor/limiter /gate To Get

I Cant Seem To Get A Software Limiter To Work Properly On Sonor Or N Track???i Have Delays In Audio When Using Live Inputs And Simply Will Not Work????everything Else Other Than Live Input Effects Work Great? Therefore I Think I Will Either Get A Compressor / Limiter To Use In Front On Mixer Or Poss In Effects
Loop..on Mixer?????? Any Good Multi Channel Units For Someone On A Budget....now I Have No Outboard Unit..and Need One To Prevent Clipping When Recording ..???

Just turn the gain down and you won't clip

yeah, you can even record drums without compressors,
but compressors are a GREAT help (and i love them)

there's lots of cheap junk out there, well, "junk",
just do a search on ebay and see what you can find for your budget

seems like you wouldn't need a gate, and a limiter ? mhhh ;.no ;..
just a little compressor, a mono comp might do for you

the ones i like :

dbx 160

tc electronic triple c (this is a digital unit, with presets and stuff, real handy if you're just learning how to work with it....)

joemeek compressors sound nice in my opinion, but thats gonna be a little too expensive for a starter;..

i heard that the RNC (real nice compressors) indeed are real nice compressors, i never heard them... but people do talk about it alot...


but .... before i write a real long post...tell us something about you,
i can't suggest you to go get that ONE compressor if i don't know what the hell you're trying to record;...
so what gear have you got ? (nothing ?) and what music you make, what do you wanna record ? and how good can you work with sonar ? (or sonor;.. thats a drumkit, isnt it ) ... cause maybe you can record with a Software compressor running in real time (don't know that sonar supports that)

I think Behringer has some sort of 8 channel limiter called "the protector" or something. Bound to do the job, if you're not too choosy.

Software comps/lims only work AFTER you record your signal and "live" input procesing is terrible, latent and cpu intensive..If you are recording to 24 bit there is no need for an outboard comp unless you like a particular sound...set your inputs to peak (loudest parts) at -9 and then work with the track afterwards...this is the advantage to 24 bit digital, a VERY low noise floor..I would suggest doing some reading/studying before running out and spending. Do you have good software comps or are you in freebie land?

The RNC, by FMR Audio. Its the only cheap comressor I have ever used that I have thought was decent. I have compressors that cost 20 times what the RCN cost and I use them both all the time.

so the audio signal first is recorded, and THEN send to the software limiter ?
that kinda sucks

but i know, you should have your sound right before it goes into your DAW,
but i was just thinking of extra security against clipping

and ehm ;.. 48khz and 24 bit ;.. thats a lower noize floor and less clipping,
but clipping still can occur, no ?
