Question about Joe Meek VC3Q

I've just ditched my cheap Behringer tube ultragain mic200 and purchased a Joe Meek VC3Q. I haven't tried using it without the compressor yet, but I'm using very light compression on my vocals and the resulting vocals dont seem to be quite as crisp and clear as they were when I used the cheap preamp. I was expecting to BETTER results with this. What compression settings do people use for male vocals on this?

thanks

Joemeeks color the sound, thats how they're made. Its nice to have, but you don't want it on every channel. You should pick you up a DMP3 for two clean channels and have the meek for color.

Thanks for that. I'm just making demos and don't plan on spending again, so i'll see what happens without the compressor for songs I want clear vocals for.

I have the joemeek vc6q and I didn't like the sound I was getting from it so I just bought a cheap pre amp and it gives me a better "clearer" sounding vocal as well they are not made for the sound I can tell you that I'm just glad mine was gave to me and I didn't waste my money on it

In Tune Audio is on a distinguished road
I have a VC3 and a VC3Q, and they do color the sound a great deal. They give you a dirty 60's rock sort of tone. It can work great with somethings, but as you discovered not on everything.
You were talking about turning off the compressor, but the preamp is where I found most of the coloration to come from. (Most, not all)

The Safe Sound Audio P1 is an awesome box for vocals, very clean transparent compression and limiting all in one dilly-yo.

The older Joemeek units were designed that way. The newer ones are much different. They are very clean and transparent, as well as crisp, but add that compressor and EQ and you can get it warm, fuzzy, colored, or just a touch to add some air. The new one is way better.

So you know, it is the compressor that adds most of the color on the old units, so you might try lightening up on that.

Funny how I get blasted for Spamming when commenting on Joemeek and Studio Projects, but you are the distributor for SafeSound, and they don't consider that SPAM. Funny place HR is....

Where is DJL and Chessrock when you need them

Thanks everyone. Bypassing the compressor for the songs I want crisper vocals on helps.

mhhh, i like the joemeek sound since i'm into pretty dark music,
and yes, its the compressor that adds most of the color, and i like that,
not on every instrument or every channel, but i'm a fan

Maybe it is a cumulative effect, I don't know. Most traffic to our site etc. comes from web searches etc. and not forums, and we rep Safe Sound Audio in one corner of the world so my comments on the World Wide don't necessarily benefit Front End Audio. It's a unit that I feel very strongly about so yes, I do talk about it when I feel it's appropriate.

I actually enjoy participating in the forums and don't rely on them for sales. There are some great people out here and I personally don't have a problem with either guy you've mentioned above. I dont know your history there with them and don't really want to get in the middle of any controversy etc.

One of the last posts I made around here was trying to help folks make a decision between some SDC's that I do not even sell, including your C4's which I think are good drum overhead mics, and the Oktava MK012's which I think excel at acoustic guitar. I don't really keep track of my pimp (it's hard to find a better word) percentages post to post but I hope they're not offensive.

And no offense taken by your observation FWIW. I think you're actually kind of kidding with me, but if anyone here ever thought I was over the top with anything I'd love to hear it in public or a PM / email.

I only talk about gear I am familiar with and am also known to bad mouth a couple of things we do carry because they are my opinions!

It's in my link bro. I noticed you got rid of your comment about spam police and the little guy, so if I've pissed you off in some way I apologize.
