Cubase SX and Tascam 428 - no sound, no fury!

I am experiencing a problem with Cubase SX detecting an electric guitar audio signal routed through the Tascam 428. I am running Windows XP with a Pentium 4 processor, 1.2 gigs of RAM, a dedicated fast hard disk (with a second hard drive for other programs, etc) fully defragged and optimized for audio, and have followed all of the directions in the owner's manual and the Quick Start manual. Still I am unable to get it to recognize the audio signal.

I have a Soundblaster Platinum 2 card (no smirks, please) and am wondering just what input setting I should use (since none of them seem to work anyway) and should I set the Soundcard or the Tascam as my input and output audio hardware in the VST connections and VST Input and Output settings on Cubase.

This should be simple, but dang it, it never is!

Thanks, and happy trails!
