How about your thoughts?

I was wondering if I could ever afford one nearly perfect channel for recording just about anything (vocals being most important) without spending more than $5,000, I would think the Nuemann U87 in conjunction with the Amek Pure Path Channel in a Box might be the ticket.

As I realize there are many more options and configurations, let me know what your thoughts are for the most perfect channel for $5000. It must include a mic, preamp, EQ, & compressor.

Thanks So Much,
Chris

I wouldn't mind a Manley Vox Box and a Lawson L-47.

OMG. I used this combination doing some BG vocals once and it was perfect! I've wanted a voxbox and a Lawson ever since.

Hi Fletcher... I'm intersted in hearing more about the gear your thinking of?

Thanks,
Don

A Microtech Gefell UMT-70 [3 pattern condener] mic with a Pendulum Audio "Quartet" will tip the scales at right around $4,100- ... a Soundelux U-195 with a "Quartet" weighs in at $3,850... if you're into some "all in one boxes" that isn't based on a tube design you could substitute an API 7600 for around $100- more... and that has the capability to grow and expand to a full console as time rolls on.

If you want to go a bit more upscale with the microphones... there are things like the Microtech Gefell 92.1 tube mic that you can couple with a Great River ME-1NV while popping a Speck ASC EQ and possibly even an RNC on the insert point of the pre... or spend a bit less effort [and sacrifice a measure of flexibility... not necessarily tone but flexibility to use the other sections of the "vocal" path on other sounds] and check out the Langevin "Dual Vocal Combo"...

Those are just a couple of the chains that came off the top of my head... and frankly, the one time I tried the Lawson L47 I thought it was a pretty nice sounding microphone... certainly miles better than the U-87... and let's face it the Amek CIB, while designed by Mr. Rupert Neve, has a couple of design flaws [design flaws that AMEK refused to fix, which was why M-A dropped the line]... the largest of those design flaws being that the compression comes post EQ without the ability to swap it in the signal path... this means that any and every move you make with the EQ affects the control of the compressor... unless of course the EQ or compressor isn't switched into the signal path... however if it is, you're stuck working that way. Personally, I almost always run my EQ post compression so I can do 'touch up EQ' on the sound... the idea being in some ways I can kinda put back some of the stuff the compressor took away

OK so, I'm hearing...

Mics: Lawson L-47, Microtech Gefell UMT-70, Soundelux U195, Microtech Gefell 92.1

Pres: Manley Voxbox, Pendulum Audio Quartet, API 7600, Langevin DVC, Great River ME-1NV.

Anybody else have a dynamite chain in the $5000.00 range?
