Best value studio monitors?

I have a fairly modest home studio and am in need of some studio monitors. I'm just working with a Korg D1200 machine so that gives you an idea of my sophistication and budget. What are some monitors that I should consider. I don't want to spend a lot. What are the best values for under $300? What are the workhorses? Thanks!

I've recentely purchased the Alesis M1 and I am thrilled about them!

I like the Fostex PM01's. If you get a deal, you can get em for $300.

The Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2s are getting good reviews around these parts. deepwater, a homerecording.com member is giving a good price for a pair @ $275. Do a search here or these monitors and read what's being said about them.

I've test driven quite a few budget ones and I like the sound of the Spirit Absolute 2's. A more knowledgable studio friend of mine uses these too

The more I read about those Wharfedale's the more I think I may have to break my self-imposed ban on buying new gear. I still love my NS-10's but I think my ears are outgrowing them.

Has nothing to do with what kind of monitors I have... I've heard the Alesis monitors IMO, they're awful -- for the money, people can do better........

I can't tell you how much more I have enjoyed playing with music since I got rid of the Alesis M1's, followed Massive's advice and got the W'dales. Blue Bear is a pro and I'm an amateur, but his advice is spot on for us home reccers.

Brett, those SOS reviews have to be interpreted - unless you know how they are written theyare meaningless. The Alesis bass response is artificially hyped - whatever I thought I heard sounded competely different when I played it on a different system, and the mid's are just impenetrable. I hear things on the W'dale the Alesis never showed me. I sold the Alesis at just a £40 loss - I'd really recommend you audition some different monitors at home and then see how you feel.

I just picked up the bx8's at www.silicondirect.com in Canada and heard them in awe. For 4 hours last night i listened to old cd's and heard tonnes of stuff I never new was there.

.....but this only occured on original CD's not on MP3's ... I heard percusssive sounds, breathing, bass swells where before I only heard bass.

Pretty impressed so far! Can't wait to start recording.

If you scale your price range up to $450 you could get some Yorkville ysm1ps, which get great reviews on here. I have a pair and I think they're damn great (for having an untreated room and sucking at engineering and such).

For $300. I'd run to get these. The PM05's are usually $300. and they're excellent.

I bought a pair of Event TR-5's a few months ago for $300 and I like them. I haven't directly compared them, so I don't know how they compare to the other monitors, but they sound really nice to my amatuer ears.

I'm with you, My mate spent £800 on a pare..not sure what ones...

Ok if you pared them up with mine his would surely shine..but when I go over to his and hear them...I don't feel worlds apart from my set up..infact I don't notice the difference.

allot has to be said for how many units a company can clear...the more you sell the cheaper you can price.

its what's happening with MICs now....you can get GREAT cheep mic made just as well as a Nueman ..."Rode K2" for much less price because more people can buy it. ....maths

although there is the fact that the more made..the more chance you have of getting a bad batch...

When I went on my own quest for monitors I noticed that every user group I polled had a majority favorite. For every person who swore by Mackie (for example) in one group, there were 2 people in another group who wouldn't use them to sit their drinks on, so good luck sorting through all that. I eventually went with the M1's based on some reviews I saw online. I can't say they are the best cuz I don't have anything to compare them to. They are the first and only monitors I've used. But I know they sound WAAAY better than the bookshelf stereo speakers I used before. I'm waiting to treat my room before I can form MY OWN opinion on them.

A quick question to the people who hate the M1's and have actually used other monitors: Did u test the M1's on their side like the manual reccomends or where they standing straight up?

Hookie - the manual says you can use them on their sides if you must but they're better straight up. Based on my own compartiive experience I'd say they are better on their sides if you only want a very low footstool, better straight up if you want a higher one.

I got a pair of Event PS6s for less than $250 on ebay. I like them a lot.

I used to have Alesis m1s in my radio station's recording room. Someone blew the woofer and i had to buy new ones. Holy crap the difference they made. I picked up event ps6. The clearer highs and punchier lows are much better. The stereo image was also much better. The alesis just sound muddy after you hear the PS6's.

I would never touch the alesis again. (too bad we have a pr in the broadcast room, I wear gloves when handling them) THe price for the alesis and the ps6's were the same.
