Transferring Tascam DA-88 & DA-38 to HD24?

I have been asked to mix something that someone else has recorded. I have been using a HD24 for some time now and I am very familiar with it. The recording I have to mix is on Tascam DTRS Hi8 tapes. What would be the best (and most cost effective) way to get the data over to the HD24. Digital would be preferred, but I wouldn't mind doing using the analog I/O if necessary.

The music was recorded on 4 machines (one DA-88 and three DA-38) synced together. They did not use more than 24 tracks across all the tapes so I am safe as far as that goes.

I was thinking about getting a cheap DA-38 or DA-88 on ebay for a few hundred $ and slaving it to the HD24 via MTC. Would I then be able to transfer the audio in sync to the HD24 one tape at a time.

Has anyone done this before? Is this a good idea?
