Best Monitors for 2K or under?

These are some monitors I've been thinking about. Really I need to go out and hear them, But I thought I'ld see what your opinions where.

- Blue Sky
- Makie HR824
- Yorkvile
- Genelec
- Tannoy
- Wharfedale Diamond

Do you perfer passive or active monitors? If you get passive how big of a role does the amp you choose for them play?

I don't need to go as high as $2,000 but at the same time I want to get something I will be happy with for years to come. What ever I get I want it to be a good investment. You may think its odd that I put Tannoy on there, but my cousin has a Roland 24 track and he's happy with those, so I'll take a look.

Anyways, half the problem is finding dealers for yorks and blueskys. I've listened to the lower end genelecs and the Mackie HD824's but wasn't real impressed with them, Not that I really know what to listen for though .

Anything you guys think I should take a look at? Anyone know what the blue sky home page is or a list of dealers in Minnesota?

Thanks

Mongoo

The blue sky web site has a thing where you can try out the system at your own place for 14 days. It cost nothing. And if you don't like them you can send them back for nothing. It's worth a try. If you do this or get them, then let me know how they are cause I need a set of momitors bad and I'm curious on how they are. Web site is www.abluesky.com

I got a good deal at Guitar Center on Event's latest offering - the ASP8 for $1200. Actually I went in to order a set of Dynaudio BM6As and after listening to my CDs and whatnot thought the Events kicked everything else out of the way - even the Mackies which surprised me a bit.

I was looking for something revealing, flat and full and comfortable - all at the same time. These guys have an 8" woofer and go down to 35Hz below where you can hear - but feel it. They're front ported and sit well right against the wall (in my room that is - depends where your modes get excited) . I don't really have a room large enough to support mid-fields but these guys work well in the near field for me.

There's a lot of depth in these guys and I sit in a 5-6 foot triangle and scamper around the stereo field a bit - left to right as well as front to back on my office chair with wheels. That helps me manually average out any remaining modes and combs that my acoustic treatments didn't flatten - my room is more or less flat to 10dB according to ETF software.

Anyway these Event ASP8s seem pretty good to me and seemed real close in quality to the higher priced JBL LSR6328P. I've got some Chesky reference CD's coming to help complete the soundscape but I'm pleased with these guys and can hear stuff I've never heard in my work before - that takes me up a notch which is what I wanted (coming from Alesis active M1s).

If you look in most of the big studios you will find Genelec 1031's. The amplifier makes a big difference. I prefer active monitors because the speakers and amps were designed to work together. There is no way for us (engineers) to screw it up by cheaping out on the amp.
