Neumann and midas xl 42 resulting in "muddy" sound
The combination mentioned in the title above, is brilliant for female vocals, but on some male vocals, it tends to get a bit "muddy".. and using the eq on the midas of course helps a bit, but it's still "muddy". I am therefore thinking about trying a condenser, like the sennheiser MKH series (40 or 50) or AKG 480/460... Has anyone here tested the U87 vs one of these mics and experienced better clarity on "difficult" male vocals?
Thanks! |

If you are using a vocal booth, try to get him a couple of feet away and put the mic about fore-head level. Have him sing below the mike. (you might have to put a windscreen in front of him as a target, so he doesn't try to sing up into the mic.) That might thin the vocal out enough.
