Unhappy Event Monitors-Kaput?!?!

For the second time this year... I toasted my tweeters in my Event Trias... The triamped PS-5's w/ subwoofer...)
At least I think I did....

Last time, I sent a 20kHz test tone to my speakers, and 1 tweeter smoked.... I could smell it... Bad... Replacement $39 plus shipping...

This time, I switched on the monitors (from a switch box) after turning them off to record vocal track. Whoops!!!! Presend on the mic was still open, and about 1 second of very loud feedback followed before I nipped it.

Both tweeters are dead. No smell this time though...

Is it possible I toasted the power amp, and not the tweeters??? I can't think of a way to test it.

Oh... and why don't they fuse those f*ckin things??? I think I will after I get this sorted out....

Any thoughts?? Are Events more prone to this problem that others?? Are others fused??? Why the hell not??? Damn... I was almost done with my final tracking a metal version of Green Eggs and Ham....

Uh... yeah... er..... just tested the tweeters.... infinite ohms on the meter... bown...that's actually a good thing.... (cheaper than getting the internal power amp looked at)

Anyone have any suggestions or comments regarding fusing these things?? 1 amp quick-blo maybe??? I think I used to have some Marantz speakers with 100 watt ratings that had 1 amp fusing...

Or... I guess I could make sure my pre-fader switch on the mic channel effects send is "out" in addition to lowering the fader before I switch the control room sends back to the monitors....

Thumbs up

FYI...
I just got off the phone w/ Event....

I spoke to Josh (again) who handles pretty much every incoming call and operations, in addition to the website. We spoke for about 15 minutes, and he offered some suggestions to prevent my recurring speaker problem.

The company is about 30 people, and they are really focusing on Monitors thsee days.

He was terriffic to deal with, and makes me want to deal w/ Event for my next set of monitors also.... Great service!!! (Very rare these days!)

No... I couldn't hear it (I peak at 16.5 Khz), but my measurement mic and RTA software could.... briefly....

How about turning it down. Most of the time tweeters are smoked because of distortion. When lower frequency stuff (which has more power) distorts, the harmonics that that creates (high frequency) gets sent to the tweeeter. The harmonics have much more power than normal high end content in a mix, and thus killing your tweeters.

Thanks Farview, but I guess you didn't read the thread...

Yeah, it was my fault, but not because the volume was too high, nor because the low frequency stuff distorted... Not his time at least!!!

Personally I think using a limiter on monitors is like having an on/off switch on a mic. Yeah, it solves the immediate problem, but not the underlying cause, which is lack of understanding of signal flow and levels.

Did you even read the thread??? I really don't think my "lack of understanding of signal flow and levels" is to blame here. I have a fine understanding of my studio's flow and levels.... I inadvertantly had left a presend up, then switched over to the monitors.... Nothing more, nothing less...

Thanks for your constructive input however!!

I had posted 1 thread on this forum, and 1 on the Event forum responding to a specific question. Is that too many for you?

I also posted a separate thread regarding use of a limiter to protect tweeters...

How many threads did you start posting your Drumagog spam for sale?? I saw at LEAST 3....
