Question Simul-Sync, Overdubbing etc ...

I'm not sure if I'm delving into the "stupid question territory" but here goes ... Is Simul-Sync or Overdubbing a more recent thing or did studios and machines of the 50's, 60's and 70's have that capability ?

Thanks!

Daniel

Simul-sync was developed by Ampex back in the late 40's - early 50's.

They started out doing 2 track units and worked their way up from there.

Their first 8 track unit was built for Les Paul who, up until then was doing sound on sound recording only and wanted a better system to work with, which Ampex obliged him with with a one inch, 8 track deck built on a 300 series transport.

Here is an interview with one of Ampex's original executives about the deck;
