I got a prob with cubase! it doesnt record longer than 7-10 seconds

Here's the story!
I got a computer with lots of memmory
but i have recent invested in in a E-Mu Studio 1820 with pach

I am using this E-Mu Studio with Cubase 5 VST
the problem is that i cant record more than 10 maybe 20 seconds
then it kind of starts to chop the Audio in parts..... some quiet and some with
the audio i am recording in realtime....
have someone a clue what this can come of?
i have thought of memmory in my computer but i got 512mb that should be more than enough...
