Inserts on mixers
I'm picking up a little Yamaha MG because I've decided to put my Behringer where my mouth is ... or maybe that's where my rubbish bin is? Anyway. It's got insert jacks and I have never used them before. What exactly are they, where do they fit in the chain of the channel strip, and what's the one-click thing all about. I will most likely want to use them as direct channel outs, if that's a good use, but understanding their use for effects etc would be good too. Thanks!

I just got a Yamaha MG mixer about a week ago too. Awsome mixer.
I had the same question about that. The insert sends an unbalanced signal out via a TRS cable and the other end is a Y connection. One being a Tip/Sleeve and the other being just the Ring. You use one for sending and the other for the return signal. More for effects, but it should be usable as a direct out and return. Haven't gone and invested in the cables yet, but that is one of the next things on my list.

Uh, no - one is tip/sleeve, the other is ring/sleeve.
Tip=send, ring=return. An insert jack can also be used as a direct channel out. You do this by putting an unbalanced cable half-way in (or to "the first click"). Very handy for recording. I have all my channel inserts connected to a patchbay for even more flexibility.

Ok, so with my 1/4" inputs on my Delta 44, I could theoretically use a jack to jack (i.e. guitar lead) to get direct outs?
My only concern is that I went all balanced about a year ago because I seemed to be picking up some hum from somewhere. Will have to see how that works out.

Han and Ethan - thanks very much. I got the mixer today and I was struck by how it seems like a 'proper' piece of kit (the Behringer UB I have has always looked like a chunky kids' toy) and how un-Mackie it is. Guess that's what you get for original designs ... cough cough.
MadAudio - are you trying to tell me something? Quote:
