I'm getting my set up with the d112 and 418's
Most kits dont have the 419?,but I'm using a headset mic that sounds good on the snare...??? Now for the floorToms 16"& 18" I'have a sm57 on the 16" and a mediocre floor tom on the 18".I'm thinking of getting another Bass drum mic for the 18". What should I use on the 16"??? |

Good Question
I also have 16 and 18" floor toms and ive been a little perplexed as to what mics i should use. The Sm57 just doesnt cut it on the low end of anything larger than 14". I usually record at home, but the last time i was in a studio they were using AKG C414's. the problem with those is that they are around $750. Would buying two more Akg D112's be the answer?

There are a lot of mics geared toward micing toms. There are also a bunch that are billed as multi-purpose that will work as well. Audio-Technica ATM 23 works great on toms & other instruments. The ATM25 is a great kick mic and will catch any amount of low end you need. Works great on bass and guitar cabs too. The sennheiser md 421 is also a good choice for an all-around that will sound great on toms.
In any case I probably wouldn't get two more kick mics. If you are going to spend the money get something a bit more versatile. |

Thanks
I've been in quandry since I've borrowed the sm56 beta
series.I have a low budget that doesn't pick up very well. I'm against a D112 just because of size.Same with the other larger mics.Do the 16" and 18" need different mics? |

Oooooh I like beta 56s. Those, too, sound great on toms and also some other things.
good luck . |

Do a quick search on ebay for an AT Pro 25.

Actually the sm57 I've got on the 18"(because the 25 has too much low end sustain.) is cheaper! ![]() |

sennheiser 604 . they come with little clips, they can take a stick hit. and they sound great. They come in 3 pacs for $250ish. they will work on any toms.

I second the Sennheiser 604 idea. I like them a little better than the beta 56's ( I have both). I use the sennheisers live for top and bottom snare quite a bit as well. Personally, I would avoid the audix and AT mics for drums unless its an Audix D6 or an AT 2500. I do actually like the Audix mini condensors though as well. My personal favorite tom mic though is the old EV 408e's. I have a set of four that I have used for years now and would never sell them. If you can find some, take a listen
Also, if you can find an older sennheiser 504, snatch em![]() |

So roll off some of the low end. I like to roll off the low end a little bit anyway, because it gives the drums more punch. |

Low end sustain
I actually turned off the EQ.
My 18" has a lot of low end already.thats why I moved it to the 16". |
