How slow are the ML9600 CD burns?

About how long does it take the ML9600 to burn a Red Book CD? I had heard something like close to an hour but then, that was not from a reliable source.

Second question: When they say "Red Book CD" isn't that the same format as burning regular old CDA files from any computer CD burner? If so, couldn’t I simply replace the slow one in the ML9600 with a more modern one?

It burns at 4x....... so an hour-long CD would take 15 minutes.

If you use DSP, the first burn will take longer because it has to render the audio file first....

For 800 freaking dollars it should be burning them in two minutes flat!

Alesis makes some really cool products but they seem to be based on yesterday’s technology. I mean 4X burners, FAT16 hard drives, c’mon, that sounds like 1997. Even their HD24 is way limited in its abilities because of an old OS.

I say let’s get into 2004 with the rest of the world guys and dump the proprietary OS’s too. I want my gear to be user upgradeable and compatible with other popular OS’s for easy file transfers. Is that too much to ask?

I guess I’ll have to build my own then.

It's not proven fact, but I'm not surprised that many consider a slower burn for Redbook CDs a benefit, ensuring well-defined pits that can assure better compatibility with more players.

I've yet to have CD burned in the Masterlink that couldn't be played even on older CD players -- I can't say the same for ones that I burned via the DAW on a Plextor drive at high-speed........ even when I use my DAW I use 4X instead of 16X......................
