Comfortably Numb...my version
I downloaded a backing track and played guitar over the top. Here's my version of Pink Floyds "comfortably numb".

Not bad -- a little sloppy... ya gotta watch the timing and some of those bum notes......
The recording certainly won't win any awards, though.......!

Not bad apart from the obvious bits. You should bring the backing track up a good bit. And maybe try and get more sustain on your guitar. Add some nice reverb to the guitar also.
Good attempt and some nice licks in there. |

YIKES!
![]() Waaaayyyyyy too over-the-top...... Satriani-style riff'ing over Floyd doesn't cut it at all, IMO........ To me - it's not about the number of notes you play per second, it's about injecting emotion into each note you play!

There's no point in doing it the same way as Dave Gilmour as that would simply be 'another cover'. Sorry you don't like it, but then again...I do and that's all that counts! Dil |

There's a significant difference between the first and second MP3s... better. The distorting guitar (lower registers) is gone in the second clip... Is the backing track the same? |

Oh, OK BlueBear, I see this forum has one of these types too...A condescending tosser who thinks he is right on everything. I'm not looking for a pat on the back, just looking for genuine feedback. Every forum has it's "tosser", and in this forum it appears to be you! |

Hey,
All the "pissing" made me decide to listen. Here's my two cents. Albiet totally uneducated two cents. The first one is MUCH MUCH better stylistically(sp?), however, the recording is crap (sorry). There is a significant amount of distortion and clipping, especially in the left channel. The second one sounds a lot better recording wise, but I gotta agree with Bear, it just don't fit to me. But hey, to each his own. That's the great thing about music. NL5

Whoops!!! Gotta chime in here....
First.... Blue Bear is right on when he says you won't win any awards here for mixing. Sh*t, it's the "Karaoke" of production... "Paint by numbers".... It's a "PRERECORDED BACKING TRACK" !!!!! Adding to that.... THE GUITAR IS TOO LOUD IN THE MIX!!!! WAY!!!! (Yes I know I'm screaming....) Okay.... now that the "production" is out of the way..... You have "some" chops, but, come on.... did you have too much coffee this afternoon??? I mean... I'm a Paul Gilbert, Malmsteen, Vai, etc fan.... but you lack taste and something called "phrasing" in your playing.... You asked for a critique, and when Blue Bear called you on it, and gave a fair and objective (and frankly, experienced) take on it, you wigged.... Well, as a major proponent of 80's shred metal technique.... I give you a C... if you're over 40, and have been at this since 1987 or before, the grade drops to a C- It's not personal, I just think you need to learn "when" to shred, and when to build an emotional peak.... And another thing... I've never met Blue Bear, but his freakin' credentials and contributions to this board are enough that I would respect his opinion. He's certainly earned the right to have one.... </Off SOAPBOX>

OK, not sure why everyone is getting hot and bothered about this, but here's something to remember...
I said in my original post that I "downloaded a backing track" and played guitar over it... The key here is "downloaded a backing track" the poor sound quality of the backing in particular is because that is how the backing is...that part I can do nothing about as I did not create the backing track. Is this clear??? I never said I wanted good or bad feedback, I just asked for comments. I am not a shred player by any means at all, just thought I'd give it a go, if it's no good, that's fair enough, I won't lose any sleep over it. It was just a one off 1st take record it and forget it affair. It is a bit funny though that you "experts" don't give any constructive critisism, you merely critisize, which is a shame as nobody will learn anything from your immature "won't win any awards" or "you need to learn when to shred" type of comments. A more mature and considered opinion would have been to offer advice as to why it "won't win any awards" and how to "learn when to shred". It appears that most of these types of forums are just full with "head up yer ass" types who think they know everything about everything and have no interest in helping others to progress. A shame really, but that's me finished here. Dil |

Here's a comment.... I just had a great Sushi lunch!!! I think I need a nap now... Seriously... overplaying is best cured by recording yourself often, and posting the results here, so that Blue Bear and myself can tell you when you've got it right... I often "overplay" myself... my recordings show it, and my wife tells me. The best cure would be to become a "better" player, so that I (we) don't have to resort to "Speedy licks" in the absence of more musical ideas... Really...

I'm not an 'expert' by any means whatsoever, but when I saw the thread "comfortably numb...my version" I expected to hear something more original than an electric guitar solo over a prerecorded track. Don't get me wrong, I think you're a very good guitarist. It would just be more interesting to me as a listener to hear something I haven't heard with the song such as a theremin solo, reverse drums, pedal steel guitar...something, anything.
I think you have plenty of skill to get guitar playing cred...no doubt about it. It just says nothing to me artistically...and maybe it's not supposed to, I'm just giving you my comments and opinions. I'm interested to see what you're capable of though so keep the tracks coming good luck! Adam |

Dil, I like it, I'd like to hear the whole song. This is my cup of thea. This is actually one of my favorite P F songs and you play the guitar very well.
