Mixing head-scratcher

Hi all,

I'm currently working on this little demo, and I'm having problems mixing it to my satisfaction. I'm fairly new to mixing and EQ and have been trying to boost frequencies on various tracks in different ranges to help them pop out (the melody just gets lost, no matter where I boost it or how much i turn up the volume). Also, though it even starts clipping at points when I'm trying to boost frequencies or levels in the mix, the composite still sounds "softer" than certain reference tracks I've been listening to from CD.

Here is the link:

Thanks,
Mike

Man, that sounded sweet to me. I don't have experience with that type of music, but maybe you should just turn everything down so that the melody part shines through a little better. even if the overall level of the song is really quiet compared to your reference cd's, because those have probably been professionaly mastered and that's the proccess that really pumps up the volume and still keeps it sounding good. A whole nother bag, beyond mixing

Panning would help a lot. I realize you have a little, but almost everything is bunched up in the middle.
