I love the Smell of New Ampex Tape in the Morning

I love the Smell of New Ampex Tape in the Morning

I linger for a while and breathe in the life-giving polyester perfume from this newly opened enchanted reel.

If you've never had the pleasure of buying a brand new reel of Ampex 456, then you're missing an important part of the whole analog experience -- bonding with your tape. You must be the first to break the seal, for only then will you command the Genie inside. And only then will you become master of "The Tape."

Forget all that ancient used dusty one (100) pass on eBay. Its life-giving polyester perfume fadded long ago as its life ebbs away; stretched and dragged screaming in agony through its own blood, which now covers your tape path ... until finally there's only a faint whisper -- a wee little voice begging, "Kill me... please... bake me or kill me but don't leave me like this."

There must be a market for spray cans filled with analog tape fragrance.

I guess.

Considering, it's probably the binder or "glue" that holds the oxide layer to the base layer, that wafts its way into our olfactory senses, it should be easy to bottle that and give it a snort on a Saturday night, just for fun!

Cheers!

We, of the analog persuasion, are already poorly regarded in this community.

And now this!

I must say though, I had a friend of mine drive to LA and pick up some "one pass" tapes we got an absolute STEAL on, and they were far better than I could have hoped for.

I cleaned our MTR to a shine, put the tape on, ran a session, and when I finished, gave it a good clean again, and there was hardly anything to clean off!

And of course I agree, there is nothing like great tape in the morning!

...Especially two rolls, sync'd up... mmm.... and on 16 track heads.... mmm... Ok, I'm going to stop before I get too excited...

I bought two packs of 1/4" 456 recently, and they did not come in the normal stupid cardboard box. INseadthey came in this very satisfying plastic box, especilly made för tape, which you need to open with a couple of very satisfying "clicks". I think the bigger 456 tapes already comes in boxes like this, but this was an ordinary lowly 1200' x 1/4". Sure felt like you got some extra super type of 456.
