I'm searching for this sort of kick...

Yea I'm really troubled, I'm in search for a kick that sounds like the kick in this placebo song http://fans.papervixen.net/puremorni...uremorning.mp3 but it's important that this sort of cliping sounding kick sounds good with high volumes. If you know what I mean. Does anybody know how to create it with compression, equalizing, effects... Or do you know where I can find a similar sounding kick? The problem with my kick is that they sound to clean. I want some dirty quality kicks, please help!

thanks

that almost sounds like a plate reverb to me. you might try that with a bit of pre delay.

if that's not it, just try making it clip whatever preamp you're using.

you should post this in the mixing/mastering area. you would get a bunch more ideas and i'm sure someone could tell you exactly what to do for that sound.

Run the drum bus through a cheap analog compressor like a dbx, symetrix, or shure level lock, and then clamp it down hard until you hear it start to distort. This can be accomplished with digital compression also, but IMHO it sounds much better through a cheap outboard unit. You can also try running the drum bus through an overdrive pedal or a distortion plugin, but that's more of a fizzy type distortion, and I think what your definitely looking for is overcompression. You might even try running it through a compressor more than once. Make sure you have a good thumpin' kick sound to start with and keep your levels really hot. I also hear some reverb and possibly some delay on those tracks.

i was thinking of the wrong reverb yesterday. the reverb that comes with pro tools (d-verb) has a preset called non-linear. it sounds very similar to those drums on the placebo song.
